The Upstart Smart Game
Ready to improve your business, network with other solopreneurs, and have a little fun while you're at it? The Upstart Smart Game is a fast-paced program designed to help you learn more about the different aspects of being a solo entrepreneur, while showing you ways to achieve balance and create a business and lifestyle by design rather than default.
About the Game
The game lasts 4 weeks with 2 tele-conference sessions per week, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. You can choose to play morning sessions (10:30 AM - 11:30 AM CST) or afternoon sessions (1:30 PM - 2:30 PM CST).
Objective
The goal is to earn as many points as possible over the course of the game. The more points you earn, the more you improve your business (so it's like a fun mini bootcamp for solopreneurs)! Plus, the player with the most points earns a prize at the end of the game.
How to Play
Each week, players work their way through Upstart Smart's 6 focus areas for solopreneurs.
Focus Area 1: smart THINKING
Focus Area 2: smart PLANNING
Focus Area 3: smart MONEY
Focus Area 4: smart GROWTH
Focus Area 5: smart MANAGEMENT
Focus Area 6: smart LIVING
During each session, we focus on different topics from one or more of the focus areas and follow with discussion and action steps that players must complete before the next call.
Players are also provided with task lists that help them move through the six areas and improve their businesses, while earning more points during the game.
In addition to the twice-weekly group sessions, players pair off as accountability partners for the course of the game to track their accomplishments and setbacks and find ways to stay on track for success.
Rules/Points
Players earn points by completing tasks of varying difficulty (the more difficult the task, the more points earned) and track the points of all players on the game scoreboard.
- Players lose 10 points for each missed session or accountability call. Note that each player gets 1 free pass, which can be used to miss a single session or accountability call (not both) without losing points.
- Players must complete the action steps from a given session before the next session. Completing or not completing action steps results in the respective gain or loss of 10 points per action step.
- Players can complete items on the task lists available within the players' area. Task lists are related to one of the six focus areas and contain items ranging in difficulty (the more difficult the task, the more points earned).
- Players pair off as accountability partners for the course of the game and must meet with their respective partners once weekly for one hour accountability calls (outside of the regular sessions). Completing or not completing accountability calls results in the respective gain or loss of 10 points per call.
- Players must update their points before each session. Not updating results in the loss of 25 points per occurrence.
- BONUS POINTS: Players are encouraged to network and find opportunities for growing their businesses throughout the game. Any created opportunity results in the gain of 50 points for each player involved in the opportunity.
Tips/Hints
- Use the player message board for support, encouragement, and advice.
- Remember that the ultimate goal is to increase the likelihood of individual business success, and although there is technically a "winner" of the game, every player who successfully completes the game is on track for success as a solopreneur!
