Getting Unstuck with Glenyce Hughes

I had the opportunity to talk with Glenyce Hughes of The Healing Room about how entrepreneurs and small business owners can go about the process of "getting unstuck," which is so important for keeping us moving forward to accomplishing our goals for our life and in our businesses.

Let's talk about getting unstuck, which is something you help your clients do.  It's really important for entrepreneurs and business owners to be able to constantly grow and adapt as their businesses grow and change, so it's important not to get stuck in any given situation or by any given circumstances.

From my experience, the key to getting unstuck is to have a clear idea of where you want to be, a goal in a sense, so when you come to roadblocks and hiccups, you really are aware of what's going on.  For example, wanting more energy to accomplish everything.  For a lot of people, that's just a case of adding a thirty minute exercise routine every morning.  Getting unstuck, first, is being very clear about what you want, then looking back as you hit the roadblocks and saying, "Here's where I want to be.  What do I need to do to get there?"  Sometimes it's training, sometimes it's making minor changes to your day, and sometimes it's just awareness, "Okay, everyday I spend two hours playing computer games.  Let's take that out of the mix and see how much more time I have to accomplish things."

It sounds like you're more focused on helping them identify underlying issues, say for the exercise example, energy is the real issue.

That's exactly it, figuring that out and taking the steps to clear it, and often, we get stuck in the stuckness.  We spiral.  We get frustrated.  We get angry, "Why isn't this working?"  I call it spiraling in the negative emotion and energy, rather than looking beyond it and saying, "Okay, where do I want to go, and how do I get there?"  That just empowers the person, because then you have choices.  Then you can look at it and say, "What steps do I need to take," instead of feeling like you're spiraling.

Well, and talking about getting "stuck in the stuckness," a lot of times it can be overwhelming.  You feel like you don't know where to start.  How do you advise clients to get passed that feeling of being overwhelmed?

That's really where they need an outside person to help them, because we can get overwhelmed and not see passed the ends of our fingertips.  If we've got someone from the outside looking in, it's so much easier for that person to see what's going on and how to change it.

Is there anything in particular that you see people struggling with this time of year?

This time of the year, with the New Year and resolutions, people do it from a negative energy, from fear.  "I have to lose weight, because if I don't, I'm going to have diabetes as I get older.  I have to start saving money, because if I don't, I won't have money when I retire."  It's done from a very heavy energy.  When we try to make changes from that kind of energy, it's a very difficult change to make.  Most people that I work with are fear-based, as opposed to, "Where do I want to be?  What do I want to do?  What makes my heart dance?"

Any final thoughts on getting momentum going into the new year?

There's a process that I do at the first of the new year where I look back over my past year and write out all of my successes in all of the areas of my life.  I write out also the things that could have been better in those areas.  I look at that as a whole.  Then I look toward the future and setting goals and intentions, so I can get excited about what's coming up.  It takes a couple of hours, but it's so worth it, because the key to getting unstuck is knowing where you're going.  It's very empowering, celebrating your successes and dreaming big, because I think a lot of people settle.  They really think where they're at is good enough, or they're too busy to even think about it.  When we can look at it and say, "No, I really want to do something bigger.  I really want to accomplish this.  This is really important."  When we can put that down on paper and put our energy toward it, we have a much better response to actually accomplishing it, than if we don't take the time to even think about it.
