Making the Most of Your Budget

Running your business on a budget can be tough.  Growth comes from sales, but how can that happen when your budget is tight, and you can’t spend more to advertise?  Working efficiently is one way to make it happen.

Outsource.

Outsourcing some of your work will give you more time to work on your business so it will grow, but it’s hard to spend that money when it could go towards advertising.  The solution?  You need to make the most of your outsourcing projects.  Give your virtual assistant work that will make the most of her time and that will help you get as much done as possible.

If there are items that you can do yourself that will take very little time, don’t give that to your VA.  Do it yourself, and give her things that may take you more time than it would take her.

Another thing you should consider is asking your VA if she offers a retainer package.  It may cost you a little more, but it will save you money in the long run.  If you offer something that your VA would be interested in, consider asking her to barter for a few hours.  Advertising her business in your newsletter and on your site is perfect for bartering.

Cut back.

If your budget is tight, consider getting rid of things that are not working for you.  If you are paying for a monthly subscription to a website, and you are not using the tools they provide, you should stop the subscription.  If you are paying for advertising that is not working, stop the ad.  There is no point in paying for something that you are not using or that is not working.

Look for deals.

Something else to consider is the things you purchase.  Can you find them somewhere else for a less expensive price?  For example, if you purchase hosting for $40 a month, look around and see if you can find the same hosting for less.  Also, check to see if you could pay for a few months at a time and receive a discount.  Sometimes quantity really does count.  Hosting, domain names, toner cartridges, paper, and other items you purchase regularly are things you might be able to get cheaper somewhere else, so check around before you make your next purchase.

Become an affiliate.

One last thing to consider when you are working on a tight budget is affiliate programs.  There are affiliate products that you could offer to your target market with no cost and very little time.  You could add a section on your site and in your newsletter with affiliate links that you think your readers would be interested in.  This will add more income to your business, and it won’t take but a little bit of time to set up.

Working your business on a tight budget is possible, if you pay attention to what you are doing and make things work efficiently.  Review your strategies monthly or quarterly to make sure they are still working well, and make and changes necessary if they are not working.
