Mary Beth Wells on Making It Happen

A lot of people wonder what it would be like to run a company on a day-to-day basis.  I spoke with Mary Beth Wells of the Precious Baby Doll Company about how her days look and how she keeps the faith as an entrepreneur and small business owner.

I began by asking Mary Beth how she continued to grow her company and develop her product on a daily basis.  Here's what she had to say.

It does not come over night.  You have to be patient.  I'm a single mother to two little girls.  You really have to structure your day.  You really have to have a period that, "This is when I'm going to work on Twitter.  This is the time that I'm going to generate leads via email."  You have to structure it.  You have to know how much time you can allocate to your business.  Do you need an additional income?  Do you need a part-time job?  You can do it.  You just have to be time-savvy and say, "Okay, this is going to have to come at night, after the kids are in bed."

You know, I get the kids to school and to daycare.  I come home.  My office is in my home.  I get orders out.  I'm sending emails out.  Before I know it, I look at my clock, and it's time to go get the kids from school, make dinner, bath time.  It's the world of a mom, especially a single mom, where you're doing it all.  I say, "The dog needs a bath?  Oh, I'll do that in my sleep," because there's no more time left in the day!  You do what you can to keep your company growing, to keep your family in tact and happy and nurtured, and it's a balancing act, but it's good.  You can find your place, find your niche, making all of this stuff happen.

And, you're right.  That's a lesson I learned the hard way.  Your days don't have to be 8-to-5.  They don't have to look like they did when you worked for someone else.  You can structure your day however you want, and if you're focused on results and not on busy-work, you can get a lot of rocks moved in a relatively short amount of time, and it's not always easy.

I was just going to say that!  There are days that you wake up and you just want to shut the alarm clock off.  I've had those days.  You have days where orders don't come in, and you just have to say, "Just put one foot in front of the other.  I'll make this happen.  I can do this."  You have to be positive, or you can tear down what you want to build before you even start to build it.

Absolutely, you have to believe in your vision and in yourself.  More often than not, it's not an easy hike, but you can get it done somehow.

Sometimes you don't know how you're going to get through it, but you just have to say, "Let go.  Let God."  Just know.  Just believe in yourself.

Trying to take care of two children as a single parent, manage a home, cook, clean, grocery shop and all the million and one things that need to be done can be overwhelming. To take on running your own business on top of that would put many over the top.

I found Mary Beth's positive, can-do attitude so refreshing and sincere. I would bet that the key to her success, even during the challenging moments, could be found in her statements like ..."Just put one foot in front of the other. I'll make this happen. I can do this."

Even more powerful, "Just know. Just believe in yourself."

So great to hear stories of kids enjoying Mary Beth's dolls, Kelly! Thanks so much for sharing yours.

Interesting article about Mary Beth, a mother of two and business owner. So true what she said as well. I would love to hear more about her and her life now, as this story got me hooked. It is always helpful to hear how other Moms are managing it all as raising kids and working at the same time is no easy task for most of us! And being a single mom is even more amazing too! By the way, the products that Mary Beth's company makes and sells are wonderful for children, and I say this from my own experience with her company's products...

Thanks for commenting, Mary Lynne. Here's some good news for you! I'm planning for Mary Beth to be a guest on my other site and radio show, Rock Your Genius (http://www.rockyourgenius.com/), so you can hear more about her story as an entrepreneur. I'll try to remember to post back when I know a date that she'll be on. If you get curious (or think I've forgotten to post an update), email me to see if she's on the schedule yet (mail [at] ambersingleton [dot] com).

I purchased 2 dolls for my 2 adopted daughters. One Latin American and one North American. Both are incredible.I am saving them for my girls 6th birthdays.I am amazed at Marybeth's energy and vitality, and immensely grateful to her for her wonderful inclusive ideas.

How amazing, right Rina? Because of Mary Beth's idea (and initiative), kids can come to understand and appreciate adoption. Your girls will probably love them! Thanks for sharing your story.

UPDATE: As of right now, it looks like Mary Beth will be on the Feb 19 show of Rock Your Genius (http://www.rockyourgenius.com/).
