Smart Growth This is part of a series called "The Entrepreneurs on Social Networking." This interview is with Brad Versteegh.
What are your general thoughts on social networking (do you think it's highly important for today's business owner, a great way to build a web presence, a fad, exaggerated in importance, etc.)?
Definitely not a fad and is critical to a successful business. Granted there are degrees of success and ability/benefit to be reaped from Social networking. For instance, if I am a service based, sole proprietor and only provide services in my neighborhood, global exposure is not likely to provide enough benefit to offset the time energy, etc. Especially if you have no intentions of expanding. But for most businesses, it is well worth the time and investment.
What have been your biggest challenges with social networking?
Time. We have actually hired a contractor to manage our social network. We are involved and do contribute. But the set-up and some of the on-going maintenance and content are provided by an outsource.
What have been your keys to success when it comes to social networking?
Experience and having a solid following prior to launching the company’s presence. Other than that, I’d have to say interesting and valuable content and consistency.
Do you have any techniques or routines that help you succeed with social networking?
Not yet. We are discussing and working on RSS feeds and blogs to fuel the content engine for our social presence.
How important is social networking to the success of your business?
Not yet determined. We anticipate that it will provide a sizable benefit and will help us expand into new markets as we grow. Having a substantial, demonstrable, positive third party supported reputation is a huge benefit over any marketing you could EVER pay for.
Any final thoughts on social networking?
I think Nike said it best…”Just Do It”. It is free or very affordable, durable and can provide substantial benefits when leveraged correctly.
